'Giving is receiving. The energy of the universe is merciful.'

Miao Shan is the Incarnation and fulfilment of mercy, a Chinese princess, believed to have lived during the tang dynasty (618-907), and was believed to be the physical incarnation of the goddess Quan Yin. Daughter of a king who wanted her to marry a wealthy man, she refused, sent to live in a monastery on an Island off the mainland, which she transformed into to a paradise. Outraged, the king ordered the monastery to be burnt to the ground, when she found out what happened, she pricked her tongue with her hairpin and magically summoned a storm that put out the fire. The king then ordered her execution, but no blade or sword could kill her, and instead such weapons shattered to pieces before touching her body. After several attempts a glorious glowing white tiger spirited her away, and took her to meet Yama, the ruler of hell, Miao Shan immediately heard the suffering of the souls all around her and one by one she liberated them with the fierce power of her empathy. Yama had to send her away because she was transforming hell into heaven, he gave her the peach of longevity as a gift. She meditated for many years, before news reached her that her father was dying, and needed her eyes and arms to live, when he saw his saviour was his daughter, he fell to his knees humbled by her mercy. Miao Shan reminds us that holding onto our hate and anger towards others only harms ourselves, which I have found inspirational in my own life circumstances. I have used a soft pink palette to demonstrate the compassionate, forgiving energy that she embodies together with a pale complexion fitting of the natural complexion of women during a large part of Chinese history.

Welcome to Gemma Frost Design. All prints are reproductions from original watercolour paintings that I created in my sunny home up in North Yorkshire. Here, I feel inspired to recreate places of natural beauty, portraits, animals and wildflowers. It gives me a rosy glow to know that people would like to brighten up a spot in their homes or offices with my creations.
